Face-to-face Counselling

This service is offered by ARAFMI Queensland Inc. for carers, family and friends of people with a mental health problem.

Counselling works in several ways:

  • it provides a confidential and non-judgemental space to talk about your feelings and concerns with someone who cares.
  • it helps put concerns into perspective
  • it helps discover and explore needs and strenghts
  • it helps find a sense of meaning and self
  • it helps with caring for yourself.

Counsellors are professionally trained to relate with, and empower you.

If you are a carer, relative or friend of a person with a mental illness and are over 18 years of age, you are eligible for this service.

Carer Support Groups
Support groups are located in various areas of Brisbane and regional areas of the State. Our aim is to give participants an opportunity to share their feelings, offer comfort and support to other members or to simply listen and observe.

For information on regional groups contact the ARAFMI Head office on (07) 3254 1881 - 24 hrs.

Free call Regional only 1800 35 1881. (For carers only)

Regional Developmental Assistance
ARAFMI Queensland conducts a developmental assistance program which aims to:

  • promote the establishment of new ARAFMI groups in centres outside the Greater Brisbane area.
  • provide ongoing support for existing ARAFMI carer support groups in regional centres.
  • provide personal development workshops for family carers in Brisbane and regional centres.

A carer/paid worker team travels to a number of regional centres - usually over a four to six day period - to facilitate workshops, attend local support group meetings and liaise with local mental health and community workers.
